The clinic is a fast-paced environment where the care of the patients is the priority, and at the end of the day we’ve made a difference in so many lives - feline and human caregiver.

Certified Veterinary Technician

Ideal candidates for this position will be passionate about our spay/neuter program, have critical thinking skills, good time management and will have experience with anesthesia induction and monitoring.

+ CVT POSITION DESCRIPTION

Major Duties:
You must be able to perform the following duties in a safe, efficient, and cooperative manner. All duties will be performed following FCCO policies and procedures.

  • Gain complete knowledge of FCCO clinic protocols and procedures.
  • Perform clinic opening and closing duties, these include some cleaning.
  • Induce anesthesia IM while cats are in their trap or squeeze cage.
  • Perform surgical prep following FCCO procedures.
  • Administer vaccines and other SQ, IM and IV injections.
  • Apply services to patients such as flea treatment, de-wormer, and ear mite treatment.
  • Clip and clean wounds as needed.
  • Surgical assisting, setting up cats for surgery, assisting the surgeon.
  • Monitor anesthesia before, during and after surgery.
  • Feral cat handling, transferring of cats from their carrier to squeeze cage.
  • Respond to emergency situations such as cardiac and respiratory arrest. Able to intubate and initiate resuscitation measures as needed. We hold periodic trainings on this so we can respond quickly as a team.
  • Assist with or perform physical exams as needed.
  • Record keeping, both physical log sheets and entering information into the clinic software
  • Surgery patient discharge, client education pertaining to recovering cats in traps, feral cats in general and any special instructions pertaining to the cat.
  • Attend Zoom clinic and staff meetings.
  • Follow the direction of the Medical Director, Lead Technician and Veterinarian on duty.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Veterinary Technician certified in Oregon.
  • Must possess excellent technical skills.
  • At least 4 years of clinical experience
  • Experience working in a high volume spay neuter clinic preferred.
  • Team player with good communication skills, questions are always welcome.
  • Willingness to learn new things and follow set protocols.
  • Support the mission of the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon
  • Able to lift 40lbs and work a physical 10-hour day on your feet
  • Able to lift up to 25lbs over your head.
  • Patience, tolerance, and an ability to work with a wide range of people.

Work Environment:
FCCO spay/neuter clinics are fast-paced, high-quality, high-volume clinics. You will work with one or two staff CVTs as well as technical and lay volunteers. You may be exposed to animal waste, parasites, cleaning products, and other things that come with working with animals.

The clinics are held at the FCCO clinic at 4522 S Water Ave, Portland, OR 97239. Clinic days are generally Wednesday through Friday, with an occasional Saturday or Sunday

FCCO is a vegetarian organization and all meals eaten inside the facility must be vegetarian.

Time Commitment:
This position is considered full-time at 30 hours per week and will be paid according to experience. If you are interested in fewer hours, we also may have a part-time position available.

Spay/Neuter Veterinarian

Spay/Neuter Veterinarians provide surgical and medical services for cats admitted to an FCCO clinic.

+ VETERINARIAN POSITION DESCRIPTION

Qualifications:

  • Possess a current Oregon state veterinary license in good standing.
  • Prefer a veterinarian who has worked at a HVHQSN clinic for at least one year.
  • Able to perform a feline ovariohysterectomy in approximately 10 minutes or less and a feline castration in under 3 minutes following FCCO surgical protocols.
  • Ability to spay/neuter up to 40 cats in a four-to-five-hour shift.
  • Willing and able to follow existing FCCO protocols and procedures.
  • The ability to maintain a professional demeanor during stressful situations.
  • Able to stand for more than 4 hours and perform repetitive movements.
  • Display a positive attitude and work cooperatively in a team environment.

Major Duties:

  • Perform spay and neuter surgeries in an efficient, competent manner following FCCO surgical protocols.
  • Perform additional surgeries as outlined in the FCCO Surgical Protocols. These surgeries include but are not limited to: cryptorchid, enucleation, tail amputation, hernia repair umbilical and traumatic.
  • Perform pre-anesthetic health exams on qualifying cats/kittens.
  • Follow up with caregivers/owners of patients with complications or euthanasia.
  • Assist with maintaining patient records.
  • Assist with post-surgical inquiries from caregivers as needed.
  • Support the mission of FCCO, the policies and procedures.
  • Oversee volunteer veterinarians to ensure they are following FCCO protocols.
  • Support FCCO staff and volunteers.

Measures of Success:

  • All the surgeries admitted for the day are finished in a timely manner.
  • The rate of surgical complications is less than 1% of the surgeries you perform.
  • You are following all FCCO policies, procedures, and core values.
  • All cats are cared for in a respectful and compassionate manner.
  • The staff is happy and positive.
  • You can perform duties in a calm and respectful manner.

Work Environment:
All work will be performed at the FCCO surgery clinic in Portland. You will be supported by a well-trained and efficient technical staff. There may be another volunteer or contract veterinarian working with you depending on the number of surgeries planned for the day. The average number of spays/neuters performed each day is 35 surgeries per veterinarian. We strive for this number but over schedule for this number to show up, allowing for the possibility of a larger clinic on some days if all the cats show up for their appointments.

Time Commitment:
This position is for up to 4 clinics per week for approximately 3-5 hours/day depending on the surgery schedule.

Managing Veterinarian

This position is responsible for the oversight of the daily care of all patients, ensuring all staff members are adhering to proper care of our patients and are following FCCO clinic procedures and protocols. As the medical team lead, it is important to display a positive attitude and act as a motivating force for all of the clinic staff members.

+ MANAGING VETERINARIAN POSITION DESCRIPTION

Essential Job Duties:

  • Work as a spay neuter veterinarian performing up to 45 spay/neuter surgeries per day.
  • Perform additional surgery as needed to improve the welfare of the cat including but not limited to enucleation, tail amputation, all types of hernia repair, entropion, and wound repair.
  • Perform the Managing Veterinarian (OVEMB) duties and provide DEA license for controlled medical purchases. (FCCO will reimburse you for the cost of your DEA license)
  • Supervise handling and recording of controlled substances by technicians.
  • Onboard, train, coach and oversee staff and volunteer veterinarians ensuring they are performing surgery to FCCO standards.
  • Manage medical emergencies on site.
  • Ensure all clinic staff members are adhering to proper pre, peri and post-operative care of the patients.
  • Perform physical exams on patients as needed.
  • Perform wellness services that are not done at the time of surgery (vaccine clinics for example).
  • Participate in clinic and staff meetings.
  • Attend the Veterinary Advisory Committee meeting bi-annually.
  • Provide consultation regarding high volume spay/neuter clinics to other programs.
  • Stay abreast of current medical procedures ensuring we are practicing “modern medicine”.
  • Attend animal welfare conferences and CE opportunities regarding HVHQSN.
  • Create and maintain relationships in animal welfare communities and the local veterinarian community.
  • Represent FCCO at functions as needed.
  • Attend board meetings as requested.
  • Participate in staff recognition and engage in ways to retain veterinary staff.
  • Point person for difficult clients as needed.
  • Write articles for internal and external publications.
  • Participate in strategic planning and assist in implementation of plans.
  • Contribute to the stewardship of the organization’s mission and stay current on cat issues impacting FCCO programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Be a Veterinarian licensed in Oregon with more than 10 years of experience working with cats and over 5 years of managing staff members in a clinical setting.
  • HQHVSN veterinarian skills required, performing up to 45 surgeries in a 4–5-hour time frame with support from a well-trained and efficient technical staff.
  • Able to work standing or sitting for 8 hours.
  • Able to perform repetitious activities for long periods.
  • Work cooperatively within a team environment.
  • Lift or move items up to 50 pounds (assisted or unassisted)
  • Communicate clearly in person and in writing.

Emotional and Mental Requirements:

  • Able to work under stressful conditions efficiently and effectively.
  • Able to respond quickly to a variety of medical situations.
  • Ability to cope with death either due to a surgical complication or from euthanasia.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, resilience, and composure even in difficult situations.
  • Perform duties in a cooperative manner while working in a team environment.
  • Passion for reducing cat overpopulation.
  • Maintain high ethical standards.
  • Rapidly and accurately process information.
  • Ability to delegate tasks.

Work Environment:
Most of the work is performed at the FCCO spay/neuter hospital. Some job duties may be performed in FCCO office space or from home with advance approval. This position mainly interacts with the medical team, but will also collaborate and interact with the Executive Director, donors, general public, volunteers, vendors, and veterinary community. Communication will be in person, telephone and digitally.
